SPIES' NOT-SO-TALL THOUGHTS
Week 3
Game 1: Danny's Mad Cows vs. The Dude's Dudes
Although they are 1-2, the Dude's Dudes are probably the second best team in the league this year. And they played like it this week. The Korber-Tall-Chirlin trio was unstoppable. The Mad Cows could not find an answer. Is there a match in this league for Korber? He scored 7 goals and 3 assists this week after a 5 goal, 2 assist showing last week. 14 goals and 7 assists on the season, he appears to be the most dominant offensive player, despite a shaky week one start which landed him with a negative power rating. Tall, with throw after throw to Korber in the endzone, picked up 6 assists on top of his 1 goal. Chirlin plays amazingly when his girlfriend watches - 3 goals, 3 assists, and one of the most amazing skies i have ever seen. Danny also plays well when his harem is in attendance. Still, the Mad Cows were just blown away on defense. Trying Ariel, Lawson, and Buff matching up on Korber, they couldn't hold him down. Still, their offense looked sound with Ariel, Buff, Beef, and Lawson working the disc very well. However, they did have 2 or 3 endzone drops which killed them.
Surprise of the Day: The Dude's Dudes' first half. At the end of the first twelve minutes, the Dudes had racked up 9 goals, and were up by 7 goals i believe. Why? Only 2 turns. They created a hole that the Cows couldn't climb out of. If the Dudes keep playing like they did that first half, they should be championship-bound.
Game 2: Becker's Peckers vs. Bill's Middle Infield Action
Finally, a victory for Becker's Peckers. With the appearance of Vag (finally), two solid alum handlers were able to move the disc around and actually get it to Sam. Sam finally became a big factor in the game with 2 goals and 3 assists (he claims he plays well when he wears my t-shirts). Vag made his FITT FU 2004 debut with 1 goal and 3 assists. However, the Peckers are going to have to work on limiting turnovers. This week, they had 13 turnovers, but managed to pull away with the win. They won't be able to win big games if they can't hold onto the disc - especially on the goal line. Bill's team is another turnover machine, b/c they are risk-takers. Potter and Cooter repeatedly put it to each other in the endzone (Potter with 1 goal, 4 assists and Cooter with 1 goal, 2 assists). However, Bill's team had an attendance problem this week, missing two of their key players - Gabe and Elliot. Elliot was a huge factor last week and his absence was a huge loss for the MIA this week. Gabe is also a solid mid who is a play maker (3 goals and 2 assists this season). With zero subs, it's hard to pull out a victory.
Surprise of the Day: Jake Becker. 1st goal and 1st assist on the season. He was really contributing this week on offense and on defense (3 D's) with the "Verbal to Gerbil" or "Gerbil to Verbil" connection. If he can keep this up, the Skipper-Becker matchup could be interesting. We'll see.
Game 3: Crocker's Roughnecks vs. Skipper's Skipping Schoolgirls
Second week in a row that Game 3 was a blowout, even though it was the matchup of undefeateds. However, man for man (or schoolgirl in this case), the Roughnecks couldn't handle the depth of Skipper's team. It was obvious that Crocker's team couldn't run with them, getting broken repeatedly, and basically getting run around the court. Most of the Schoolgirl goals were uncontested, with an easy catch in the endzone. Nate had an impressive showing, with 4 goals, 2 assists, and a point block. Male Skipper also impressed the crowd (2 goals and 3 assists) even though he contested a 100% legitimate stall by Spies. (no hard feelings, since I spiked it right by his head. sorry again, Skip.)
Surprise of the Day: This game wasn't even close. The Roughnecks simply did not take any risks in week 3. What they really needed to do was put it up to Neil, Evan, and Spies and hope for the best. However, they tried to handle the disc around a team of fast defenders - not the right strategy. And the Schoolgirls did the right thing - hold onto the disc and work it to the open guy.
