The Tufts Elephant Men have a long history of success at the highest levels
of college ultimate frisbee. In the early years, tournaments were
generally mixed club-college, and the college series was unorganized.
However, beginning in 1988 a ranking algorithm began to be used to rank
all teams according to their performance against other college teams.
The graph at right shows a historical record of these rankings. Over the last 12 years, Tufts has averaged a rank of 36, 69th percentile, and a UPA power score of 1070. While these numbers put Tufts in high company, it doesn't touch such powerhouses as Stanford, Santa Barbara, or ECU; however it is close to most of the Ivies; and with only two years in the lower half of the league, Tufts' consistency has outlasted some dynasties, like the older Texas, SUNY Purchase and Glassboro State teams. There have been some great teams and not so great teams over the years, and some of these show up on these graphs. The graph is coincidentally bracketed by the Nationals teams of 1989 and 2000. Before going 2-4 at nationals and not having a win counted in the official scores, it should be noted that Tufts' rank was 15th in 2000. The percentile shows how good Tufts' teams were compared to the rest of the league, in this respect the 2000 team was almost equal to the 1989 9th-place team, although the multitude of bad schools reporting scores has increased a bunch in recent years. The middle of the 1990's was also marred by some bad years, the low point definitely coming in 1995-96; followed by a long rebuilding process. The winning percentage graph shows that the number of games the E-Men play has gone up recently, and we tend to win a lot of them, too. There have been only two years in the past 12 with losing records. Finally, the (incomplete) table shows Tufts' finishes over the past 22 years. Most of these are gleaned from reading the history, some from memory.
