Summer

Regionals

The Tufts E-men came into Amherst for the New England Regional tournament as the 2 seed, hungry for one of the region’s 2 bids to nationals. The tournament was entirely bracket play, so starting on Saturday morning every game was an important battle. Tufts started their Saturday against 15 seeded Brown as the clouds loomed ominously overhead. Brown, playing at a level far above their seed, made it tough for the E-men from the very beginning. The teams traded points until play was suspended by lightening. After an hour spent at DH’s house watching Nino stomp Bambi in FIFA the E-men headed back to the fields and the observes allowed the games to resume. Brownian Motion hung with the E-men the whole way, but in the end quick disc movement and solid defense allowed Tufts to come out on top 15-12.

In the second round the E-men met UVM Team Chill and finally looked like the Tufts team that had earned the number 2 seed. Breaks came easy and whether it was with deep shots or multiple in cuts, the E-men seemed to be scoring at will. It was a quick victory 15-7. As a storm raged the E-men took the field in the semifinals against Sectional rivals Harvard Redline. From the get go, Harvard took control of the game, mastering the conditions in every way. Tufts couldn’t quite seem to find a rhythm as Red Line broke repeatedly and took half 8-2. By now the storm had cleared up to some extent but the E-men couldn’t recover, losing the game 15-6 and dropping down to the backdoor bracket.

On Sunday morning Tufts faced Brown again in the pre-quarters of the backdoor bracket. It was another close game with each team gaining breaks only to be broken back. The E-men hit a patch of energy and surged to take half 8-5. The second half was again highly contested, with Brown running their strong offense through their handlers. The game was close till the end, but the E-men capitalized when it counted, winning on game point 15-14 after an athletic D by Jay Clark. Next up was UMASS in the Quarterfinals of the backdoor bracket. As per usual the Emen-Zoodisc matchup was a heated, talented game. The E-men dropped down 3 breaks early in the game, making the score 4-1. However, Tufts would not go down easy, staying focused and breaking back to take half 8-5. The focus and precision of the E-men handlers would become apparent in the second half as the wind picked up a bit. Zoodisc again got close, but Tufts managed to stay a point or two ahead at all times. With the score 14-12 Tufts the hard cap horn blew. The rules state that the teams were to play the next point out and then end the game, making it a 14-13 final in Tufts favor.

The E-men moved on to the game-to-go against the Middlebury Pranksters, who had lost in the tournament final to Harvard. The E-men came out a bit flat, dropping break after break to start the game. Middlebury was calm and focused, taking half 8-3. Tufts came out a completely different team after half though. Athletic defense led to easy goals for the E-men as they battled back from the deficit. Thanks to hard work and a little bit of luck Tufts brought the score back to 8-8. Despite the E-men run Middlebury got on the scoreboard again on the next point and didn’t look back. With the score 10-8 Pranksters and the hard cap looming, Tufts seemed to punch in a goal, but a foul on the thrower brought the disc back. When play resumed a layout D ended the E-men run and the hard cap sounded. At the end of the point the game was over with Middlebury winning 11-8 and taking the final spot at Nationals.
